Family of 5 travelling from Australia and couldn't have had a better experience with Hugh at the Barn! The serenity of the location and proximity to Ohau ski field, the food, the hot tub, and ultra comfy accomodation made this the highlight of our 2 week trip around NZ's South Island. Definitely going back, and hope to stay even longer than our 4 nights! Host Hugh was amazing.

Amazing location, breakfast, evening meal, sleep and host (Hugh). The stay was absolutely amazing with amazing views, stunning out of this world location, looking at stars from the spa and balcony and the walk around the propery. Access was great along with how peaceful the whole area is. To top it all the host (Hugh) was just an amazing person making our stay all the more great with fabulous breakfast and evening meal. Never had a better nights sleep. There is nothing to fault, YOU SHOULD BE CHARGING MORE.

Set the bar for a B&B for us! From the moment we arrived we were welcomed warmly into the house, which was cosy, comfortable and just where you want to be at the end of a long day. The food was deliciously home cooked and hearty, the beds were nice and comfortable and Hugh was very accomodating.

Wonderful stay. My goodness! Hugh and his parents are such wonderful hosts! You will be welcomed like a member of the family, in a warm and comfy home, eating local and delicious meals and enjoy beautiful landscapes. Hope we will be back soon.

Amazing time - hospitality at its finest. Thanks to Hugh and his family. Your hospitality is amazing, we had a perfect time, felt right at home from the start. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. This was B&B at its finest. I would rate 20 points if I could. We will try to make it back.

Une chambre d'hotes avec une accueil formidable, une cusine delicieuse, un hote adorable.

An idyllic setting off the beaten path in the forest, in a haven of peace in the heart of nature, facing a lake. The owner is very freindly and has a lot of humour. He tells many anecdotes of his life and has the gift to put you directly at ease. B&B decorated with taste, rooms offering noble and very cozy raw materials. The owner served us a typical New Zealand feast for dinner. The breakfast was also royal and was a treat. In short, faultless in every way. Here, tranquility and authenticity are the key words. What generosity and what a wonderful human adventure. We will never forget Hugh, By far the best B&B of my life.

We spent 2 nights at Hugh's place and we absolutely love everything about it. Hugh is an excellent host and great cook. He was always ready to help, chatted with us often and even showed us around the beautiful Lake Ohau area one morning. Complimentary breakfast was provided every day, which was amazing. He also prepared a lavish dinner for us one night which was definitely worth trying if you wish to get a taste of traditional New Zealand cuisine. Bedrooms are clean and well decorated, and the company of the lovely dog and cat just made the stay even more enjoyable. Hughs place is amongst the few B&Bs that I would want to go back to, and I would recommend his place to everyone looking for warm hospitality, local experience and a close encouter with nature.

Absolutely fabulous stay! We were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived at The Barn and were greeted by Hugh. The Barn is a little slice of paradise and the stay is made complete by Hugh's attention to detail in everything he does. Great food, great company and amazing scenery. Definitley worth the trek off the beaten path.

Wonderful host, home, food and drive over too! Wow. We didn't know what to expect, but Hugh was amazing in every way. The rooms are impeccably decorated, there are plush guest robes and slippers, and we were even greeted with an amazing array of home-baked (but restaurant quality) cookies, tea & coffee, and basically stuffed full with incredible culinary delights. THe rooms look like they are straight out of HGTV. Basically if you want to be waited on hand and foot and wonder how Hugh manages to do it all while being the greatest and wittiest conversationalist ever, stay here!

Beautiful homestay at a special place. I loved the location, away from the touristy route, and with the beautiful lake and mountains surrounding it. The family that runs the place are lovely, warm and hospitable and you feel as if you are staying with family friends. The room was beautifully decorated and I loved waking up to the beautiful scenery. Hugh and his mom cooked delicious meals and added lots of personal touches (My Country flag to welcome me, a jar of wild flowers in my room etc) to make my stay extra special. Their dog & cat were also lovely to get to know.

Wonderful hospitality, we really enjoyed our stay at The Barn. How friendly and welcoming Hugh and his mum and dad were, plus the very tasty dinner. The views of the mountain from the bedroom window, snow & stars, amazing!

The Barn exceeded all expecations, a magical place. The Barn at Killin is simply a magical place and an experience in South Island hospitality not to be missed. Hugh, Rae & Chris are perfect hosts and did everything to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Lake Ohau is beautiful and a good place to explore the region with restaurants and shops close by in Twizel. The bed was very comfortable with lake views and the breakfasts were exceptional. You need to order dinner as well, as Hugh's cooking is fantastic.

A must go destination, we will be back! Hugh provided a level of hospitality that everyone would like to receive but don't normally do. This accomodation can not be faulted. We really had a great stay there.
March 2018, Ray, Australia

The best B&B we've stayed at! Hospitality was terrific and very accomodating. Hugh and his family were a wealth of information regarding answers to our travel questions. The B&B is very clean and comfortable, views are excellent and so is the food.
March 2018, Ronald, USA

An excellent find for great accomodation and wonderful company. Although a little off the beaten track, the house rooms had a wonderful view in a quiet location. More than that, Hugh as host was excellent (we asked for and really enjoyed a superb evening meal). Helpful, thoughtful and very good company. If only all accomodation was this good!
March 2018, Dan, United Kingdom

Very thoughtful host. Beautiful breakfasts! The 'B' was right back in B&B!
March 2018, Kate, Queenstown, New Zealand

Hugh is talkative, humourous and considerate. He has a good website, a very beautiful house, comfortable and very clean. Thanks for the breakfast by Hugh, so delicious, and for flying the Chinese flag. It was an unforgettable experience.
March 2018, Zong Lei, China

Killin B&B is a unique experience in a stunning location. Hugh is an amazing host - so welcoming and engaging from the moment you arrive that you immediately feel right at home. The food is fantastic - we had a beautiful home cooked dinner (with free flowing wine) and a great breakfast that set us up for the day. Hugh is definitely achieving his mission of putting the 'b' back in Bnb :) Highly recommended.
March 2018, Jo, Auckland, New Zealand

Hugh is an amazingly kind host. He had a lot of nice attentions for us. He cooked a wonderful dinner with vegetables from the garden. The place is really quiet, which was just what we were looking for. A diamond in the middle of NZ. Bedrooms and bathroom are very very clean. Our stay was just perfect. We have done more than 70 Airbnb and this one is definitely in our top 3! We'll come back again for sure.
March 2018, Angelique, Germany

Hugh is an excellent host. His attention to detail is amazing and he goes out of his way to make you feel at home. The nibbles were great, with homemade pate, dinner had vegetables fresh out of the garden and breakfast was a real creation. The bedrooms were very comfortable.
February 2018, Andrea, Waikato, New Zealand

Beautiful surroundings, warm welcome, homely atmosphere. Exceptional attention to detail. Great cooking. Quality linen and towels. Highlight of our trip.
February 2018, Lauren, Australia

It's such a nice place, very friendly and warm host, so we very much recommend Hughs house.
February 2018, Lingo, Taiwan

Fantastic, we wish we had booked a longer stay. What a wonderful place to stay. An absolute must in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Ohau. Welcoming reception, you really feel at home here. Dinner is highly recommended, Hugh can cook delicious and knows how to spoil his guests. Really great.
February 2018, Gerard, Netherlands

Home from home. Amazing host. Nothing is too much trouble. Idyllic location, quiet and peaceful. We would thouroughly recommend staying here and we will certainly be back.
February 2018, Sue, United Kingdom

A wonderful place with the best host I have ever met! Certainly the best breakfast in NZ! The decoration wonderful! The amazing place in the forest near the lake, the kayak, the spa pool...and the best host I have ever met since my trips!
January 2018, Magali, Reunion

Hugh and his beautiful gem is the reason why I do Airbnb. First I would like to start and mention that the location is stunning, quiet with breathtaking scenery. But what made our experience outstanding was our host-  Hugh & his family were so freindly, lovely and happy to share their passion about their home, heritage asd local knowledge. They go well above and beyond to make you feel like you're home in a perfect balance.
January 2018, Hen, Auckland, New Zealand

A true Kiwi experinece in Canterbury's back country. Would go again with no hesitation. We got the best welcome ever, Hugh & his family were so kind to us, it felt just like we were part of the family. It was a true kiwi experience and the highlight of our trip.
January 2018, Sebaix, New Caledonia

This is a warm and social place to stay, the open and friendly residents of The Barn welcome you into the heart of their family. Hugh's food is wonderful, he offered a real personal touch to our welcome.

Piece of paradise in the middle of nowhere. Great staff, view & room.
December 2017, Gordana, Khazakstan

Hugh and his parents were just awesome in accomodating all of us. He has a wicked sense of humour. He has a very pleasant phone manner and just simply fabulous!!! Great work Hugh.
December 2017, Siri, Australia

Amazing cozy stay with lovely hosts and superb breakfast. The host Hugh, and his parents were lovely, really warm and kind welcome to the property. We shared some food with them and received a bottle of wine in exchange, was really a fun and interesting evening. After our dinner we had a dip in the awesome spa pool, it was still too early for watching the stars, but that's amazing as well from the "Royal Room" - where we stayed. Super comfy bed, very clean bathroom and well selected, high quality shower supplies. Breakfast in the morning was amazing - huge plate with eggs benedict, homemade meatballs, yoghurt, fruits, tea & coffee. We really enjoyed our time at this beautiful lake with super nice hosts. Will definitely come back if we stay in the area again.
December 2017, Nina, China

Nice cosy home, lovely hosts. Love the friendliness of the host and the big breakfast. The house has a lake of its own so is very private.

Get ready for top-notch hospitality. Hugh and his family are welcoming and the rooms are clean, comfortable and full of interesting decor. Hugh is a great communicator and full of tips on where to go in Mt Cook and along the main road.

Bloody awesome, best stay ever in my NZ life! EVERYTHING was perfect. Clean & modern facility, lovely host & family, comfy atmosphere, warm welcoming, divine meals.
November 2017, Nu Ri, New Zealand

Fun, relaxing, and a taste of high country NZ. Hugh was a fantastic host who made us feel really welcome and cooked us a delicious dinner & breakfast. He went the extra mile by providing laundry & ironing facilities which was a real help. Beautiful location by Lake Ohau.
November 2017, Julie, United Kingdom

If you get to stay at Killin with Hugh then you are very lucky. Everything was perfect and I felt very spoilt and looked after by Hugh & his family. Would recommend staying longer if you get the chance. The best Airbnb experinece ever.
November 2017, Hilary, Napier, New Zealand

Extremely enjoyable authentic experience. Amazing host & food. We will definitely be back!
November 2017, Jordan, Australia

Here you don't just get a room but a home; not just hospitality but a family. The scenery was beautiful but the experience is what we will take away with us. If ever we are back over this way we will stay here.
November 2017, Bron & Glen, Australia

How a B&B should be! Marvelous hosts at a B&B where you feel right at home, Hugh & his family are the best. Also a perfect location to slow down and enjoy the amazing surrounding (we stayed 2 nights, but was way too short) Would go right back; one of the highlights of our Kiwi experience we will not forget easily..
November 2017, Karl, Belgium

The house is warm inside, clean and tidy, full of home feeling. Every detail makes you think Hugh is a lovely, kind, polite person. Hugh made dinner, which was very delicious. Recommend.
October 2017, Li, China

Exceeded our expectations, loved Lake Ohau! Really enjoyed the family feel of the property and the chat with Hugh, family & friends. Magic place at Ohau with lots of area waiting to be discovered. Thanks for the expert advice!
October 2017, Konstantin, New Zealand

Not a bad word to be said about The Barn. Not a bad word to be said about its location. Not a bad word to be said about Hugh and his family. Not a bad word to be said about the accommodation (the private or the shared). Not a bad word to be said about the breakfasts or the optional dinner. Not bad to be 11,000 miles from our own home but to feel so thoroughly at home! thank you Hugh. We will be back.
October 2017, James, United Kingdom
It's definitely the best B&B I've ever stayed!!! Hugh, Rae, Chris are super nice and we had a lovely chat that night. Puppy Tay & cat Lala are so adorable. The house is like a museum and our rooms are warm and sweet. We only hope that we could have stayed there for more nights.
October 2017, Wenwen, China

Great stay! Hugh is a wonderful host and did everything to make us feel comfortable. Nice house, located in a perfect remote area. For an additional cost you can arrange absolutely perfect dinner.
October 2017, Tymofii, Ukraine

We were extremely happy to stay at THe Barn and could not have wished for better accommodation in the area. The bed was very comfortable with fantastic views and the breakfast were exceptional. Hugh was a perfect host and did everything he could to make us feel welcome and comfortable.
October 2017, Peter, Australia

Staying at Hugh's place was a highlight of the trip. The food was incredible (we had dinner as well), location is gorgeous, and Hugh and his family are an absolute delight.
October 2017, Jenna, Seattle, USA

Wish we could've stayed longer! During our short stay in Twizel, we booked accommodation at The Barn at Killin hosted by Hugh and his parents. The stay there was unexpectedly amazing as we thought we were about to get lost in a Blair witch project due to the location. But the location turned out to be a perfect remote area that was peaceful and a great getaway from the hustle and bustle. With the most breathtaking views right from his backyard, pictures just don't do them justice. And if you're lucky to get a clear night like we did, the sky is flooded with stars. Hugh's hospitality was indescribable because you wouldn't be greeted by a host, but a friend who has a passion for making people feel welcome. We felt like we were coming home after a long trip away and it was a shame we only stayed one night. I personally would recommend booking Hugh's lovely home to anyone visting NZ.
September 2017, Sarah, Australia

Hugh went above and beyond during our stay. I can't recomment staying here enough! He catered very kindly (& deliciously) to our vegan needs, and we even joined his family for a glass of wine. The home is very warm, clean and comfortable. We had a lot of space to ourselves. Thank you!
September 2017, Courtney, Washington, USA

Wonderful overnight trip, would thoroughly recommend to anyone! Hugh has an absolute eye for details, this comes through in all aspects of your enchanting stay. 10/10 for the Ohau Hilton.
August, 2017, Samantha, Wellington, New Zealand

The Barn at Killin is a beautiful pace to stay in a lesser known but, in our opinion a must see destination on the South Island. We cannot recommend staying there enough. Lake Ohau is just fantastic.
August 2017, Ruben, United Kingdom

Excellent place. Clean & well furnished. Friendly hosts. Tasty breakfast. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay in Ohau.
August 2017, Andrew, Colorado, USA

August 2017, Deborah, Auckland, New Zealand

If you are looking for a real Kiwi experience, here's the place. I travel with whole family and here we feel like living with our own family. I love everything about this place. The dinner is so cool & worth the $.
August 2017, Karn, Thailand

Hugh and his family were very welcoming and friendly. The rooms were warm and comfortable and Hugh's breakfast cooking skills are unmatched. Hugh even went to the effort of pre heating the spa for us so we could relax under the stars. Highly recommended.
July 2017, Danielle, Australia

Staying at The Barn was an absolute pleasure! The guest rooms feel like a small luxury hotel! Hugh's attention to detail in decorating, soft furnishings, bathroom accessories made this family home an outstanding Airbnb experience. The delicious home cooked breakfast and dinner were certainly worth the extra few dollars, especially when staying in a remote area. A glass of bubbles in the hot tub on the deck, after a day's skiing only added to the luxurious feel. Hugh is an amazing host, lively, chatty and so welcoming! We will return!
July 2017, Duncan & Sheena, Queenstown, New Zealand

Hugh's accomodation made my travel perfect! It's the best!
We really appreciated the quality of the breakfast you made. I will come visit again next year.
July 2017, Hong, South Korea

We loved our stay here. Hugh & his family welcomed us with open arms to their lovely warm house. It felt like staying with family. The breakfasts were amazing and a great start to the day. We loved getting all the history and local knowledge of the stunning area.
July 2017, Ana, New Zealand

The Barn is a fantastic place to stay. Hugh is an excellent host and buying the dinner option was an absolute treat for us. Our kids (6, 11 & 15) loved the stay and playing with the puppy. We also enjoyed the spa in the clear frosty weather and the trip to Ohau ski field is a short drive away.
July 2017, Hilmar, Iceland

This place is good for the soul! So peaceful and a very special environment. We were working so it was only one night before we had to be on our way. The breakfast was just what we needed and the house was full of the smell of baking! Hugh is a true host and all of our needs were met. We had a view of the lake with the full moon from our room, a beautiful room with stunning decor. We certainly would stay again and were sad it wasn't longer.
July 2017, Graham & Debs, New Zealand

There are 3 bedrooms on the upper floor with a shared bathroom. Bed is comfy and room is cosy. We have privacy upstairs and share the living/dining area downstairs with Hugh & his parents. They are jovial family and we have lots of laughter interacting with them. The living area has a fire place to keep us warm. For breakfast we had salmon and poached egg on spinach with rye bread. Well presented with silver service (Just like Ritz-Carlton!). The Barn is secluded via private road and away from the neighbourhood. A few metres away is private lakefront access. You can dip in the spa pool and enjoy the mountain views. Hugh's house has a puppy and cat and kids will love it. Nearest town Twizel is approx 20 mins. Hugh is able to prepare dinner, highly recommended to those that want to experience the B&B concept.
July 2017, Salimah, Singapore

We feel so lucky that we got to stay at the Barn with Hugh, his lovely parents and the cutest little puppy Tay. We absolutely loved it there and didn't want to leave! Hugh went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The Barn is gorgeous, the food fantastic, and the company unbeatable...We will be back!
July 2017, Jessica, New Zealand

Staying at and with Hugh and his family was a secluded, unique and wonderful time. The Barn is hidden on their private property with access to Lake Middleton (Ohau). It is the perfect spot to have a secluded and quiet holiday. The rooms are cosy with either lake or mountain views! You can gaze the stars at night from your bed and watch the sunrise over the lake. The provided hot spa pool on the deck is also a nice spot to relax after a day full of walking in the Aoraki/Mt. Cook national park or after your ski trip. Since we are visitors in the winter season, it is to mention that your fire place was one of the greatest things in your house. It kept us warm all along! As experienced Airbnb users we can say that this stay was perfect and outstanding! We couldn't have asked for anything more. Hugh made us a lovely breakfast and we highly recommend to take the dinner offer. You not just get a kiwi culture dinner, but also it is quite tricky to get food around that area. We enjoyed the company with his parents so much and got to hear a lot about the area history and recommendation of places to visit. You can reach Tekapo, Pukaki, Mt. Cook, Omarama and a lot more places within an hour or 1.30 hr. Hugh, thank you so much, we had a perfect time. You set high standards for our future expectations to a Airbnb place/home! We couldn't have chosen any better. We miss you already and hopefully we will get a chance to be your guests again.
June 2017, Melanie, Germany

Hugh, we loved to stay with you. we had a great time, enjoyed your company and the lovely meals. We hope everything will turn out perfect for your business, and that you can live your dream! You were born to do that!

Hugh is a wonderful host! We couldn't have asked for a better host & you made our weekend. I cannot thank you enough! May 2017, Deanne, New Zealand

Hugh is a wonderful host. It is a beautiful setting, very lovely and excellent setting and beautiful house. Hugh is doing a great job, made our stay absolutely terrific and we will go back in the future. I can only recommend Hugh's place to stay!
May 2017, Liza, New Zealand
My Nephew had his wedding at The Barn in April 2016! Was a wonderful venue, the location, food and atmosphere was amazing. I highly recommend The Barn for a break away, either by yourself or with friends and family. Hugh & the Spiers family are amazing hosts.
